Maconnic cabin

In the maconnic terminology, one calls cabins or workshops the basic groups of the Franc-maçonnerie. Only these basic groups have the capacity, essence in freemasonry, to initiate novel members.

The workshops of the first three degrees (apprentice, companion and Master) are called cabins symbolic systems or blue cabins . Those of the complementary ranks or higher , called " High ranks " in some Rites, carries specific titles ( cabins of perfection , chapters , learned assemblies , consistories , etc), but remains always cabins with the general direction.

A whole of cabins of sensitivity related and located geographically in same the state constitutes a Obédience. In theory, a cabin can be open only with the presence of at least seven brothers or sisters - according to whether obedience is mixed, male, female, or that it accepts the sisters or the brothers in his center for the last two cases. Certain obediences require in this case that they have all the seven the rank of Master. Only the Masters, and sometimes the companions, are active members of the workshop and have the capacities of vote and election.

Officers of the cabin

A cabin is chaired by a Vénérable Master, assisted by a college of officers, all Masters. The number and the quality of those differ according to the rites; however one always finds the first supervisor , who with the load of the companions, and the second supervisor , who has that of the apprentices. The Vénérable directs as for him the whole of the cabin.

They are assisted moreover of a secretary charged to draw up the report of the meeting which one calls held, of a treasurer , agent of the metals of the workshop, a hospital , agent of the " trunk of the veuve" and in charge of the charitable actions of the workshop, an expert - or " large expert" - charged with taking care of the good progress of the ritual, a main of the ceremonies , director of those, finally of a roofer , officer symbolically charged to draw aside the Profane , curious possible.

With these officers is added, in the rites of French origin as in the R.E.A.A. (Scottish Rite old and accepted), a speaker charged to supervise the regularity of work in accordance with the payments of obedience, to give conclusions on those or of speaking in the name of the cabin.

Nonmaconnic cabins

All associations which take the name of cabins are not necessarily maconnic. Indeed, this mode of organization was often copied, until in its denomination, by the friendly companies (such as the Odd Fellows or the franc-gardeners) like by very many other associations of the Anglo-American world.
