Machines of the Island

the Machines of the Island are a project of artistic experimentation and creation launched to Nantes in 2004 and inaugurated in 2007.

The concept

Within the framework of the urban renewal of the island of Nantes, Nantes Metropolis, convinced by the idea of François Delarozière (creative of the machines of Royal spectacle of the company of Luxury) and of Pierre Opening of associations “Manaüs” and “the Machine” decided to develop on the island a tourist project: “ Machines of the Island ”. “The Machines of the Island” were built in the old markets Alstom and are exposed in the Nefs Dubigeon, rehabilitated in place of production and musical experimentation but also of spectacle.

“The Machines of the Island” include/understand an elephant, the “Tree with the Birds” and the “marine World”.

Between 160.000 and 180.000 visitors are awaited for the first year of exploitation.

The project cost 4,8 million euros:

  • the Large elephant: 2 million euros
  • the scenography of the gallery: 2,2 million euros
  • the study of the Tree to the Birds and its prototype branch: 600.000 euros

Machines

The Elephant

The elephant, is located in the Dubigeon Naves and was inaugurated on Saturday, June 30 2007 at 6 p.m. Measuring 12 meters height for 8 meters of width, it can accommodate 35 passengers per voyage. The visitor will embark, actuate his mechanism and will discover Nantes in height, of Trentemoult to the Place of the Trade. The public will be able to cause some trumpetings and effects of dust. It will have a vision of the mechanism and each vibration of the elephant will be felt.

Marine Worlds

“The marine Worlds”, envisaged for 2009, is a horse-gear on three stages (surface, abyssals zone, funds underwater) out of concrete with a frame semi-wood, semi-steel.

The tree with the birds

The “tree with the birds”, envisaged for 2011, will carry two will hérons steel which will carry a score of passengers for a circular flight (eight flights per hour). One will saunter in the tree by borrowing the hanging gardens, of the vegetalized branches resembling hulls of boat. The tree will be established with the site of old the Tripode, opposite the stage Marcel Saupin.
