Machine Raytheon de Tucson

the factory Raytheon de Tucson is an important production center of Missile S, located close to the town of Tucson, in the Arizona (the United States). Of 1951 with 1997, it belonged to the company Hughes Aircraft and depends since 1997 on the firm Raytheon.

Hughes System Missiles

This establishment initially was “Factory 44” of U.S. Air Force ( Plant Air Force; 44 ). The ground of 1.450 hectares on which the factory is always the property of the U.S. Air Force. It is located at the southern periphery of the town of Tucson, in the vicinity immediate of the airport international ; it is also very well served by the highways Interstate I-19 and I-10.

The factory of Tucson was exploited of 1951 with 1997 by division “ Hughes System Missiles; ” of the company Hughes Aircraft Company. Of 1952 with 1997, more than one half million of missiles of various types were produced there. The activity evolved/moved with the liking of the military orders and thus of the foreign politics and defense of the United States. The manpower of this factory, which had reached 9 000 people, fell down to 3 900 in 1992, after the Cold war.

Whereas the factory knew a slowed down activity, Hughes Aircraft repurchased division missiles of the firm General Dynamics, whose factories were located at Pomona (agglomeration of Los Angeles) and San Diego, in California. Seven production lines were then transferred to Tucson like close to 3 000 paid these two factories.

Raytheon System Missiles

In December 1997, Hughes Aircraft sold its defense-electronics activities at the Raytheon company, which then gathered in Tucson its own units working for defense, located at Andover, Bristol and Tewksbury (Massachussets), as well as bought units with Texas Instruments Inc. and in E-Systems Company. Of the personnel coming from five companies and eight production centres was thus gathered with the factory of missiles of Tucson, from now on exploited by Raytheon Missile Systems Company (RMSC). Moreover, 1 400 engineers were engaged to face the renewal of activity. The integration of this personnel resulting from different cultures of company was not immediate.

The factory manufactures 19 types of tactical missiles, of which the AMRAAM, Tomahawk, Stinger, Sidewinder, Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM), Sparrow, Standard, FGM-148 Javelin and Leap. It conceives them, the factory, tests them, places ammunition there, then the book with very demanding customers: armed forces of the United States and those of more than 40 countries.

Factory RMSC of Tucson includes/understands 24 principal buildings and has a covered surface of 280 000 square meters. In 2007, manpower exceeds 11 000 personnes ; RMSC is the first employer of the town of Tucson. L machine Raytheon de Tucson is also the first production center of missiles in the world.
