Toponymy
The toponym Macaye appears in the forms Maccaie (1599, titles of Navarre), Maquaie and Sanctus-Stephanus de Macaye (1683 for the two last forms, collations of the diocese of Bayonne).
History
Paul Raymond note which the Viscount of Macaye depended on the Royaume of Navarre.In 1790, Macaye was the chief town of a canton including/understanding the communes of Macaye, Mendionde and Louhossoa, and depended on the district of Ustaritz.
