The Sierra Nevada ( snow-covered mountain in Spanish) is the name of a mountainous solid mass attached to the betic Cordillères located in Andalusia, Spain, which extends on the zone centers and south-eastern Province of Grenade and part of the south-west of the province of Almeria. In 1996, it was declared Réserve of the biosphere by UNESCO and in 1999 most of its territory was classified National park because of its values Botanique and paysagistic. It is the solid mass highest of all the Western Europe after the the Alps and highest of the Iberian peninsula, with the peak Mulhacén with: 3478 Mr.

The Nevada Sierra, as well as the betic chain was formed during the alpine Orogénèse with the tertiary era. Because of its insulation and its altitude, as of the end of the Glaciation of Würm, the solid mass became the refuge of innumerable plants and endemic unsuited to the Mediterranean latitude at which it is located. It includes/understands, according to the Spanish Department of the Environment, 66 vascular plant species endemic like 80 clean animal species. One finds within the limits of the national park the southernmost ski station of the highest Europe and of Spain.

Sierra Nevada wants to say snow-covered chain . To 200 km as the crow flies of banks of Africa, emerging from a torrid plain, the culminating point of Spain deserves its name well. One reaches rather easily in the middle of the solid mass by the “highest mountain road of Europe”. At the beginning of Grenade, to 640 m, it curves until: 3150 m of altitude.

It is difficult to speak about peaks or needles. The principal solid mass of the betic cordilleras is made of a succession of domes and back of ass. Nevertheless top of: 3478 m of the Mulhacén or its neighbors hardly less raised, the such Veleta (: 3392 m) one arrive, at the dawn of the clear days, to see the African coast on a line which goes from the Straits of Gibraltar to Oran, that is to say approximately 250 km.

  • Grenade is with the bottom of the one of the slopes.

  • the other shelters the area of the Alpujarras.

The presence of this mountain modifies considerably the climate around, which takes continental characteristics the winter whereas it is tropical dryness the summer.
