Progressively appeared innovations

For the first official outline of “ Leopard ”, Apple specified that it would not evoke all the functionalities to prevent that “friends start their photocopiers more early only they should not”. The company was thus satisfied to only communicate on ten great innovations (detailed further in this article).

One year later, Apple states to present an “almost final” version of “ Leopard ”, by revealing some innovations (new Bureau, new Finder) which are added to those already presented. As often after the advertisements of Apple, the reactions are shared between those which awaited more surprise (born Teasing company makes an attempt), and the others.

Innovations of the operating system

New office , with from now on:

Dock in Three dimensions,
which can contain piles of documents (the stacks in English),
new bar of menu (semi-transparent, according to the bottom of screen) which contains a zone of research in the Aide menu, allowing to quickly find an order in a menu, or an article of support,
the interface of the windows was harmonized: there is no more that only one official topic (that appeared with version 7 of ITunes), the brushed metal texture thus is not used any more,
finally, the interface is vectorial;

new Finder , which revêt the same side bar that iTunes, can sail in the files thanks to Cover Flow (an also taken again functionality of iTunes), and makes it possible to have an outline of the files by their icon (small pocket of album for the musics, first words for a text, first page for a pdf, etc);
QuickLook , a new functionality which makes it possible to have a fast outline of a file without having to open the application which is associated there. Many types of files are supported: images, musics, textual files, files pdf, presentations, vidéos, documents Microsoft Office, etc;
Time Machine , a new utility which safeguards automatically, continuously and transparent, all the files of a user (on a external Hard drive or a waiter) and allows their restoration the chart, in all compatible application;
Spaces , a new functionality which brings to Mac OS X the support of the “multiple offices”;
Boot Camp , which makes it possible to install Windows XP or Windows Vista on Mac has Intel processor, will be integrated officially into the operating system (fine of the period beta);
Spotlight , the fast research tools, will be able from now on to carry out research thanks to Boolean operators , and this on all Macs of the Lan. It will be also capable to seek the contents of the dictionary and to carry out calculations without having to open the Calculator;
integration of Core Animation , a new system of development of animations, usable by the developers to improve the interactivity in their applications, or for the creation of savers of screen, for example;
improvement of “ the universal access ” of the system to the handicapped people, with in particular new a voice synthesizer more realistic, the revision of the navigation system in the various elements of the system and the support of the Braille and the Subtitling advanced in QuickTime;
system conceived entirely in 64 bits , allowing a native execution of the applications of this type, while remaining compatible with the applications 32 bits, and this, without emulation;
improvement of the functions of parental control (remote control, definition of time beaches of “curfew”, logs complete, etc).

Removed functionalities

the pretty floating clock does not exist any more. The hour, like formerly, is more available only in the bar of the menus.
navigation in the files since the Dock by menu and sub-menus is not possible any more. From now on, the icon of the dock does not lead any more but to one window of icons. One must open a window of the Finder to continue navigation.
the orthographical corrector does not comprise any more the button " proposer". This button made it possible to correct the manually typed word, particularly useful provision when there are too many typing errors so that the corrector does not identify the mot. It does not remain now any more but the manual dictionary in this case…

Updates of the software delivered with the operating system

Photo Booth , which makes it possible to take photographs and to apply special effects to them (several new effects were integrated), will be compatible with other apparatuses that the ISight;
Front Row , which makes it possible to use the functionalities multi-media of remote Mac, will be integrated into the operating system and will adopt the same topic as that used by the Apple TV; however, Apple did not specify if the functionality will be available for Mac which are not provided with an infra-red receiver, which allows remote control via Apple Remote;
new version of Email , which will allow inter alia choosing between several models of messages in HTML and regarding messages as tasks (these last being able to be divided between several applications);
new version of Safari , with in particular the addition of the functionality “ WebClip ”, to transform a portion of Web page into widget, protection anti-phishing thanks to Google and the possibility of managing the miters manually;
new version of ICal , with in particular the management of the protocol CalDAV;
new version of the Reader DVD , with in particular the possibility of creating its own extracts;
new version of IChat , the application of instant messaging of Apple, with like innovations connection to several accounts simultaneously, the possibility of being invisible for the other users, the recording of the audio and video conversations, new a codec for a better audio quality at the time of the conversations, the appearance of the miters to manage its conversations, the integration of the effects Booth Photograph to the conversations vidéos, “ iChat Theather ”, to share with its correspondents its presentations, its diaporamas or its sequences, but also its office, and finally the “ Backdrops ”, to place one image or a sequence in Incrustation at the time of a video conversation, blue or green bottomless
new version (1.5) of TextEdit , which corrects some bugs (inter alia, the access to all the lines of the large cells of table is now possible), and proposes the format odt in reading and recording.

Innovations for developers

New version of Xcode 3.0, as well as the utility Xray, an graphical interface for the Framework DTrace, intended to analyze and optimize the performances of an application
New system of dynamic allocation of memory.
official Availability of Dashcode, an application of development of widgets.
the random allowance of memory (safety)
SandBox which restricts an application to give him access only to that for which it with need (safety)
the automatic tag for all the applications downloaded to know of or they come

Supposed innovations

Several people who have an access deprived to the versions under development of Mac OS X 10.5 broke their contract of confidentiality while revealing on the Web of the captures of screen of functionalities which had not been officialized by Apple. Among those, one can note:

“invited” account (temporary user whose files are removed as of its closing of session) *;
function audio/video responder in iChat;
restoration of removed files (functionality distinct from Time Machine);
synchronization .mac of more éléments*;
integration of the grammatical correction in all the system (thus accessible to the third applications, as it is already the case for the orthographical correction) *;
support of the filesystem ZFS;
fire wall Internet more personnalisable*.

If the official functionalities are to be considered with precaution, those owe the being still more.
