Hendrick Avercamp , (1585 - May 15th 1634), is a painter Dutch.
Biography
Born with Amsterdam (Netherlands) not far from the " Nieuwe Kerk" , Avercamp is baptized the January 27th 1585 in the " Oude Kerk" city. His/her father (C. 1557 - 1603) had married in 1583 the girl of the Latin principal where he taught. The following year it is recorded as apothecary come from Plank and is established like such in 1586 with Kampen (Netherlands). For its artistic education, Avercamp was sent in formation in Amsterdam in the portraitist Danish Pieter Isaacks (1569-1625). In the sale preceding the return into 1607 by its professor to Denmark, Avercamp is identified among the purchasers like " the dumb man of Pieter Isaacks". In another document of 1622 it is named " Hendrick Avercamp the muet". No indication makes it possible to suppose that " of Stomme van Kampen" (the dumb man of Kampen), according to its nickname, that is to say also deaf.
During its years of Avercamp training is influenced by the painting of landscape practiced by the Flemish painters installed with Amsterdam, Gillis van Coninxloo and David Vinckboons. The first drawings which one knows of Avercamp register indeed in this tradition.
Avercamp probably turned over to live in Kampen in 1613. He knew a great popularity of alive sound. He sold his drawings, of which much coloured a mixture of watercolour and gouache, like images to be stuck in albums of collection. Hendrick Avercamp died in Kampen where it was buried with the " Sint Nicolaaskerk".
Work
Avercamp is one of the great painters of the Dutch school of the 17th century, specialist in the scenes of winter, in the surroundings of Kampen and on the Ijsel river. The tables of Avercamp, alive and coloured, put in scene of many characters of all classes finely drawn. Its first works express its interest for the narrative details and the painting of kind in the taste of Pieter Bruegel Old the, father of Flemish painting, creative of the tradition of the winter landscape ( Paysage of winter with skaters and trap door with birds , 1565, royal Musée of Brussels), of which it had to know the Paysage of winter (Museum of Vienna, Austria). One finds at Avercamp of the elements characteristic of this technique, horizons high placed, decorative network of the branches of very large trees, rates/rhythms of the space progression since the foregrounds, scattering of the color in the composition.
In its Avercamp maturity sticks more to the evocation of the winter light filtered by the fogs which dissolve the distances. Its contribution is regarded as essential in the development of the Dutch painting of landscape.
Barent Avercamp (Kampen 1612-1672 or 1679), nephew and raise of Hendrick Avercamp or its younger brother, worked in the same style as him, on rather similar subjects, but, estime-t-on, with less spirit.
