In the Greek Mythology, Maïa (in Greek old Μαῖα / Maĩa ), is elder Pléiades, girls of Atlas and Pléioné. Allured by Zeus, it gives rise to Hermes. Later, Hermes will entrust to him Arcas, wire of Zeus and the nymph Callisto, so that it raises it in hiding-place of Héra.
The fifth month of the Gregorian Calendrier would have been named May in its honor by the Romains.
Its name literally means “small mother”, Hypocoristique given traditionally to the grandmother, the nurse or the midwife.
The term “Maïeutique” would also derive from its name.
