MTV Unplugged in New York

MTV Unplugged in New York is an album Live of the group American Grunge Nirvana. As its name indicates it, the album was recorded with New York, N.Y., in the studios of the televised chain MTV, within the framework of its spectacles in acoustic formula. The spectacle was recorded the November 18th 1993, diffused on MTV the December 14th of the same year, and the album was launched on a purely posthumous basis nearly one year later, on November 1st 1994, seven months after the death of the singer of the group, Kurt Cobain.

At its exit, Unplugged in New York made its entry in first position of the American prize list of the sales Billboard. The disc gained in 1996 a price Grammy in the " category; better album of alternative music ".

The principle of the MTV Unplugged (" débranché" in English) a group to play a panel of its compositions but also of the recoveries the whole in Acoustique is to make it possible. This concept allows an new approach of the group, to see it under another angle. Thus Nirvana forsook the time of a session the sound saturated for its acoustics.

Kurt Cobain is made to supprendre by the arrival inatendue Cris brothers and Curt Kirkwood of Meat Puppets, artists ignored that he appreciates particularly, and profits takes again three of their pieces with improvisation: " Plateau" , " Oh Me" like " Lake off Fire".

It takes again also " Jesus Wants Me For has Sunbeam" of The Petroleum jellos, another group little known, which was a source of important influence for Cobain (" Molly' S Lips" and " Its off Gun" has; , of compilation Incesticide , are resumptions of Petroleum jellos). The title however is credited under the name " Jesus Doesn' T Want Me For has Sunbeam". At the time of this pieces, Krist Novocelic plays of the Accordéon while Dave Grohl is with the Guitare.

It takes again also a title of David Bowie: " The Man Who Sold The World". Bowie already indicated that he regretted never not to have been able to ask Cobain the reason for which he had chosen to take again his song. The spectacle finishes on a resumption of the bluesman Leadbelly: " My Girl (Where Did You Sleep Last Night) " , famous " Where Did You Sleep Last Night".

" Something in the Way" , of the album Nevermind , and " Oh Me" , interpreted with Puppets Meatus, were crossed to the assembly for the television program, but appear on the disc. On the other hand, a court jam during which the group interprets an extract of " Sweet Alabama" Home; of Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as instrumental jams of " Sliver" and " In Bloom" were omitted as much on television than on the album, just like many " white " , discussions and scraping of throat which characterizes Kurt Cobain.

The emission of the series " MTV Unplugged " putting in the Nirvana high-speed motorboat was realized by Beth McCarthy. It is about the first disc of Nirvana on which Pat Smear appeared, former guitarist of the Germs who accompanied Nirvana in round, and regarded in the last years of the group as the fourth member of the formation of Seattle.

Original plans

There was at the base no intention on behalf of MTV to market a recording of this album. The death of Kurt Cobain, the April 5th 1994, changed obviously gives it, although at the moment dissolution of the group, only one song (" Where Did You Sleep Last Night") was the subject of an official exit. The resumption of Leadbelly was reproduced on a B-side of " Pennyroyal Tea" launched early in 1994, but recalled immediately by the company of disc, with died of the singer.

Certain rumors gave a report on the publication of a EP for the summer 1994, at the head to support the presence of Nirvana of poster of the festival Lollapalooza, participation which was by the cancelled force of the things.

Twelve years after its exit, it was sold 5 million copies of them in the United States.
