MSP430

MSP430 is the name d´une family of Microcontrôleur S of the mark Texas Instruments.

Characteristics

Built around a CPU 16 bits, MSP430 was conceived for applications embarked to low consumption and low costs. It is particularly adapted to the wireless telegraphy applications functioning on battery S.

The component is declined in a series of configurations including/understanding the usual peripherals: converters A/D 12/10/14 /16 bits, converters D/A 12 bits, comparators, interfaces USART, SPI, I2C, pilot LCD, watchdog, multiplying hardware, DMA, internal oscillator, etc Put aside certain models old with EEPROM (MSP430C3xx), certain versions large volumes with ROMANIAN, all these circuits are programmable by JTAG or BSL.

The MSP430 is a very widespread option for the measuring devices with low consumption supplied with battery. Its operating process on standby consumes less than 1 microampere. It functions at frequencies of about 8 MHz, 16 for the most recent models.

It has however limitations which prevent it from being used in more complex embarked systems. For example, it does not have an external bus storage (which would give access effectively external ROMANIAN memories RAM/) and its storage capacity (8K of RAM, 120 K of flash for best equipped) can appear insufficient for applications which require large data tables.

Development tools

Several environments of development are available for this microcontrolor. Texas Instruments, IAR systems, Crossworks and Rowlet associates offer total solutions of environments of development with various kinds of versions of evaluation limited either in time, or in volume of code. The world of the free software offers also a solution MSPGCC usable on several platforms. This environment is based on the compiler and debogor GNU.

For the programming part the msp430 has its programmer the ez430 which is size of a key usb, it is used as programmer, debugor and simulator. It is a system of development low cost: approximately 20$ the ez430 and 1$ or 2$ (according to model) for the microcontroleurs.
