MR-63

MR-63 is a type of oars on tires ordered in 1963 by the Town of Montreal for its subway then in construction. The company Canadian Vickers obtains this contract of construction of 336 cars, similar to MP 59 of the Métro of Paris, which it delivers for the opening in 1966. Originally used on all the lines, they find now only on the green line which passes to the downtown area.

Description

The cars are made of a light steel alloy, measure 2,5 meter of width per meters length and comprise four sliding doors with two leaves on each side. 40 seats there are found and of the place for approximately 60 passengers upright but their full capacity of load is of 160 passengers.

They have electromagnetic brakes which act on side casters guides which are pressed on vertical bars. Mechanical braking is ensured by shoes of yellow Bouleau, soaked with oil of Arachide like squanderer of friction, applied to the steel wheels when the train passes under 10 km/h. Braking causes the cooking of this oil what gives an odor characteristic of puffed up Maïs flaring when one enters the subway. Their system of brake and engines are very effective and allow them to minimize the deceleration and acceleration time in station.

In 2003, that is to say thirty seven years after their service entrance, each one of these original cars had traversed more than three million kilometers. The company which built them does not exist any more and the spare parts are machined by the personnel of maintenance of the STM or by Québécois subcontractors, for example avoid-break it are made by a company of the area of the Beauce. but will arrive soon at the end of their service life. The renewal of these oars gives place to an arm wrestling between Bombardier Transport and Alstom. First makes the point that the contract will enable him to keep open its factory of Pocatière, where they were renovated before, and requires a agreement Private with the Shipping company of Montreal (STM). The second wants a Invitation to tender regular, even if it means to travel by Bombardier in subcontracting because they do not have a factory of assembly in Canada.

The May 11th 2006, the Gouvernement of Quebec announced that the contract of renewal of the cars of the subway was granted without invitation to tender with Bombardier with a delivery beginning in 2010. The minister makes the point that Bombardier is the only railway manufacturer in Canada. However, Alstom has counter-attack while requiring of the Superior court of Quebec to consider the subject. A judge must hear the request in September 2007 and Alstom required the May 11th 2007 an injunction to put an end to the discussions between Bombardier and STM in order not to return its action in null and void court.
