M61

M61 (or NGC 4303 ) is a Spiral galaxy, of SABbc type, located in the Constellation of the Vierge and discovered on May 5th 1779 by Barnabus Oriani.

Characteristics

It is one of the largest galaxies of the Virgo Cluster; its apparent diameter of 6 minutes of arc corresponds to approximately 100  000 light-years, comparable with that of the Milky Way, and its Magnitude connect of +10 one deduces a absolute Magnitude from -21,2.

Four Supernova E were observed in M61:

  • 1926A (mag 12,8) was discovered by Wolf and Reinmuth
  • 1961I (mag 13) by Humason,
  • 1964F (mag 12) by Rosino
  • 1999gn (mag 13,4) by Dimai.
