M47

M47 (or NGC 2422 ) is a open Amas located in the constellation of the Poupe, very close to M46.

Discovered

M47 was discovered before 1654 by Giovanni Battista Hodierna, but as work of this astronomer fell into the lapse of memory until one them redécouvre at the beginning of the Années 1980, this cluster was found independently by Charles Messier on February 19th 1771.

But made Messier an error during the calculation of the position of the object which it observed, and so the object which it had catalogued M47 was identified only in 1934, no nebulosity being with the position indicated. William Herschel redécouvrit thus in its turn this cluster in 1785, independently of the others.

Characteristics

M47 consists of about fifty star S, in a volume of 12 light-years of diameter approximately. It is located roughly at 1600 light-years of the Solar system, of which it moves away at the speed of 9 km/s. This confers a apparent Diamètre to him of 30 minutes of arc, about equal to that of full the the Moon. Its age is estimated at 78 million years.
