M46

M46 (or NGC 2437 ) is a open Amas located in the Constellation of the Poupe. He was discovered by Charles Messier in 1771, just after the first publication of his catalog of diffuse objects.

This cluster is very rich in star S, with approximately 150 stars ranging between the magnitudes 10 and 13, the total of the members being probably located at the neighborhoods of 500, and most luminous of all having a magnitude connect of 8,7. M46 is roughly with 5400 light-years Solar system, of which it moves away at the speed of 43 km/s. It extends over approximately 30 light-years diameter, and its age is estimated at 300 million years.

Visually, the Nébuleuse planet gear NGC 2438 seems to belong to this cluster, but it is probable that it is actually not a member, appearing there only by visual effect (it is probably much nearer, at approximately 2900 light-years).
