M43

M43 is a diffuse nebulous belonging to the great nebula of Orion M42.

She is discovered in 1731 by Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan, which sees a “ brilliant nebulosity surrounding a star ”. In its drawing of M42, Charles Messier gives him a particular number, M43, in 1769. William Herschel catalogued it itself like H III.1.

M43 is lit by the star HD 37061, Nu Orionis magnitude 7, and would contain a stellar Amas.
