M3U

M3U (MPEG version 3.0 URL) is a Format of file the purpose of which is to store a list of audio or video file.

The format

Implemented at the origin for the lists of readings of Winamp, it is a simple list éditable with the hand (line by line) of addresses URL or local, absolute or relative of files Audio.

The m3u seems to correctly function on the multi-media majority of the readers (with share ITunes which reads only the first title when it is in “configuration of factory”; corrected since iTunes6 under OSX)

The wide format

  • defined by the comment: #EXTM3U

  • then #EXTINF: followed duration of the title in seconds (or -1 to be unaware of the duration) and of a comma.
  • the title of the piece.
  • And with the line: the URL of the file.

Applications

  • Streaming : it is the lightest and universal solution to offer a Stream audio on a Web page: A file m3u containing the URL of the piece to reading is placed in bond on a page, the file m3u will be downloaded almost instantaneously during the activation of the bond, it will be opened by the audio reader of the visitor who will then launch the streaming starting from the URL source.
