M107

M107 is a globular Amas located in the Constellation of Ophiuchus. He was discovered by Pierre Méchain in April 1782.

M107 belongs to objects of Catalog Messier which have be discovered after publication, and although it seems that Méchain intended to add it to a later edition of the catalog, this one was finally introduced there only in 1947 by Helen Sawyer Hogg. The discovery not having been published at the time, this cluster was redécouvert independently by William Herschel in 1789. Herschel was besides the first to solve it in star S.

The visual observation lets foresee a cluster having a apparent Diamètre of 3 minutes of arc, while the photography with long installation makes it possible to observe all the extent of it, that is to say approximately 10 minutes of arc. Taking into account the distance estimated at 20  900 light-years, M107 extends roughly over 60 light-years.

The cluster approaches the Solar system at the speed of 147 km/s, and contains approximately 25 variable stars proven.
