M.I.A.

M.I.A. is an author, interprets and performeuse. Mathangi " Maya" Arulpragasam of its true name was born on July 17th, 1977 with London in the district from Hounslow. It is an artist of origin tamoule (Sri Lanka). Its music combines various elements of Grime, of Hip-hop, Ragga, Dancehall, electro, and Funk, which gives an urban sound, tribal, multi-cultural and committed at the same time.

Biography

At 6 years, it leaves England and moves with her Kali sister and her parents in Sri Lanka. His/her father becomes there a known political figure, founding member of EROS, revolutionary organization coed for the independence of Tamil. One year after, Maya leaves with his/her mother and her sister in Jaffna, in the North of the country, where is born his/her Sugu little brother. The civil war bursts, and the small family without the father emigrates with Madras, in India, in a house in ruin far from all. This period sees the family managing to eat with its hunger. A return to Jaffna in full civil war obliges his/her mother to turn over then with her children to India, and from there in London as a refugee. Maya is 11 years old, she learns English and turns to the rap and the hip-hop thanks to the radio. Maya is high gifted and creative, which ends up obtaining a place with the Holy Exchange Martins Art School of London, where it studies Beautiful arts, the video cinema and it. It starts in painting as an engaged artist, to move then in the world of the music by making a video of the group Elastica in round. It meets the singer Peaches, the queen of the electro-clash, which initiates Maya with the sequencer Roland MC-505 and gives him courage to launch out in the only form of art in which Maya feels the least sure it: music. Of return to London, it gets a sequencer of occasion and makes a demonstration of 6 songs. The DJ' S tear off individual Galang, published with only 500 specimens. Its musical career is launched.

Anecdotes

has its recording company XL Recordings, it would have said when they engaged it " believe me, you me cherchiez".
While speaking about its individual " Jimmy" , she would have claimed that she was to be quite drunk to make a song also disco music.
