History

The name ( Gievenbach , i.e. Güörtpott or Goltepelsbach in local dialect) seems to have Germanic origins. The district is mentioned for the first time in 889 as a Villa Gibonbeki . In the beginning, Gievenbeck was only one small country village along Gievenbach. Space was gained by clearing campaigns, thus appeared the current street Gievenbecker Reihe which became the central street of the place. The street Appelbreistiege which is not useful today that of cycle track at the beginning the most important commercial street of Münster in direction of the west was.

In 1903, Gievenbeck was integrated into the Überwasser district of the town of Münster. They were always only some farms. In 1920, one counted only 521 inhabitants. Electricity made its arrival in 1921.

After the second world war, whereas the university hospital of Münster (Universitätsklinikum) was aggrandi until Gievenbeck, the district developed quickly. A new district appeared around Michaelkirche. In the Seventies, the districts was largely increased, in particular by the construction of residences coeds. The first were those of Gescherweg and Rüschhausweg. The district grows then in direction of the North-West. In the Eighties, the district still increases, mainly towards north with the streets Von-Esmarch-Straße and Schöppingenweg/Gescherweg. With beginning of the year 90 was created the residential district of Toppheide.

Since the year 2000, the district extends in direction from south-west and should in a near future exceed the course of the 20.000 inhabitants, owe thus the second larger district of Münster after that of Hiltrup.
