Written and drawn by Hugo Pratt, , is the 29e ventures Corto Maltese and the last album of the series published of living of the author. It succeeds the Helvétiques .

With this account, writing with the return of its voyage to the Easter Island, the author gives to some extent, a prolongation with Under the sign of the Capricorn , because we find Levi Colomba and Tristan Bantam, in 1925, continuing their research of the continent lost in Central America.

History

Attention: what follows, reveals whole or part of the intrigue.

a diver goes back to water surface. It is Corto Maltese which returns from an underwater exploration. On board boat, Soledad, Levi Colomba, Stop Gilded, Raspoutine, Tristan Bantam and Jesus-Maria surrounds it to know if it found what they seek. With 20 meters of depth, he saw paintings Maya S in a perfect state of conservation.

On the shore of the close island, the ship is spy by Dandy Roll and his two assistants. The drums are made hear; the Indians also took note of the presence of the sailing ship. A flight of Quetzal S informed them return of the god Kukulcan , called “Head of sun”.
the fallen night, an Indian approaches, with the stroke, of the boat. It observes the Soledad blonde accoudée with the rail. “Sun Head” is a woman!
a boat approaches silently in its turn. On its board: Roll dandy and his companions. “Sun Head” is in danger. The Indian turns back to warn the magicians of them.
During this Corto time and its friends unscrews on the various civilizations lost during the millenia. The irruption of Roll threatening them of a revolver, crosses short to their discussion. Raspoutine is not let intimidate. Quickly controlled, the intruder reveals that they are not alone on the island. The tribe of the Indians Ciboney occupies the city of deaths, vestiges of an ancient city, on the other side of the volcano. Intrigued, they project to go there as of the following day.
With the alarm clock, the crew notes the disappearance of Soledad. At once, Corto, Raspoutine, Jesus-Maria and Tristan go to ground to seek it…
Dissimulés in the foliages, the Indians supervise their progression. A seaplane then flies over the island with apparently troubles of engine. They see it to be crushed in the jungle. Arrived in front of the apparatus on fire, Corto precipitates to extract the pilot from his cockpit. It is healthy and except but unconscious. When it removes its helmet to him, they realize that it is about a woman. Taking again its spirits, it declines its identity: Tracy Eberhard. This unexpected new recruit, joint with them to continue research.
They discover soon a temple. As scouts, Corto and Raspoutine climb of them the steps which lead to a room. Intrigued by the symbols of Templiers engraved on the walls, Corto falls by inadvertency in sands moving from a well…
Sorti this bad master key, our sailor is accommodated by the man-jaguars which cause it to fight them…
After having overcome these first tests, it does not know where Raspoutine passed. However, to save Soledad is its priority. It only engages in a labyrinth where, at the end of staircases without end, await it worrying meetings; where, behind each door strange places appear, until finding itself vis-a-vis the Moaï S , “those which look at stars since thousands of years”…

But will Corto be able to save Soledad? Will it find Raspoutine and its other companions? Which adventures still await it?
