Möhne tank
The Réservoir Möhne is an artificial lake of Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia, approximately 45 km in the east of Dortmund. The stopping was built between 1908 and 1913 to help to prevent the floods, to control the water level of the the Ruhr downstream and, of course, to produce electricity. The lake is formed by barring two rivers, the Möhne and the Heve, and with its four basins, it contains up to 135.000.000 m ³ water.
The stopping was destroyed by the British bombers of the Royal Air Force, called the Dambusters in the night of the 16 to the May 17th 1943, during the Opération Chastise, with the stopping of Edersee in the north of the Hesse. Special bombs were developed to rebound over the nets of protection suspended on the top of water. Result: an immense hole of 77 m by 22 m was bored in the stopping, creating a monstrous flood which killed between 1200 and 1600 people. The effect on the German Effort of War was however minimal, the stopping having been completely repaired in October 1943.
