The Métaure (in Italian Metauro ) was old a department of the Roman republic of 1798 to 1799, then Royaume of Italy of 1808 to 1815. It was named according to the river Métaure, and had for Chef-lieu Ancône.

History

The department was organized first once during the creation of the Roman republic of 1798 to 1799.

It was recreated the May 11th 1808 when the Marches were detached from the Papal States to be annexed by the kingdom of Italy, increased areas of Pesaro and, as from 1810, of the Montefeltro (which belonged to the Rubicon in 1798-99). It was increased, on December 18th, 1810, of the area of Gubbio, detached of the department of the Musone.

This department was recreated éphèrement for the third time between April and May 1815 at the time of the reconquest of the southernmost and central areas of the kingdom of Italy by Joachim Murat.
