Ménilmontant

Ménilmontant is a district of Paris located in the XX {{E}} district.

History

Before 1860 and its annexation in Paris by Haussmann, Ménilmontant was a village of the suburbs, pertaining to Belleville. Its name would come from “Mesnil mau time”, i.e. the house with the bad weather, but “mau time” was transformed at the 16th century into “going up” because of its situation into height.

Located outside the Wall of the Farmers general and thus of the zone of the Granting, the wine was less expensive there and of many guinguettes had developed there at the 18th century.

After its annexation, Ménilmontant remained popular quarters, called “Ménilmuche”.
