History

The Bresse is an old bottom of lake which was emptied at the quaternary era. This canton belonged initially to Séquanes, populates Gallic area of Besancon, then it was joined together in Ségusiens which lived the Lyonese and Drill it. It was still separated from the latter and formed a particular country under the name of BRIXIUS SALTUS, entirely covered of marsh and forests. When César undertook the conquest of the Gaulle, of the roads were built and the forests were cleared. After the invasions, the area louhannaise belonged to the Burgondes, then with the Francs. Under the Mérovingiens, it depended sometimes on the Royaume of Burgundy, sometimes of the kingdom of France, according to whether they are attached or separated. When France was divided between wire of Charlemagne, the Bresse is located between the three kingdoms of Lothaire, Charles the Bald person and Louis Germanic the. In 878, the son of Charles the Bald person gives Louhans, which was then a city, to the abbey of Tournus. In Louhannais, the population increases and several rural parishes develop, of which that of Ménetreuil. The exact date of the foundation of the church of Ménetreuil is not really known. A charter of XIIe century mentions Ménetreuil: Ecclesia de Monistrolio, 1155 (Desroches manuscript). The parish was diocese of Lyon, under the term of Pierre saint. The patronage of the cure belonged to the monks of Gigny (the Jura). Ménetreuil depended on Châtellenie de Cuisery, one of the largest noble houses of the Bresse, that of the lords de Bâgé, whose important seigniory had for first origin a concession made in Ixe century by king Louis Débonnaire, in reward of the military services with Hugues, governor of the borders, who was the first count de Bâgé and marquis de Bresse.

Ménetreuil comprised three seigniories: · Rambeau · Devu · Montjay, which had also their castles. · That of the oldest RAMBEAU, had belonged to Jean de Charnez in XIVe century and drew its name from the woman of this lord, Jeanne Ramboz, who founded in 1377 a vault in the church of Ménetreuil. · That of the DEVU had belonged to the lords de Brancion and had been melted, for a long time, like that of Rambeau, in the baronnie of Montpont. · That of MONTJAY, which passed to Fyot, had its castle " mound of Montjay and island on Sane which surrounds it, drawbridge and bridge dormant" (1578, Inventory of the strongholds). A castle of the XVIIIe century, rebuilt in 1730, was demolished only nowadays.

Ménetreuil, as all the parishes of the Bresse of the south used of the statute law, i.e. one observed the Roman laws like common right there.

The grounds belonged to the baronnie of Montpont, with its head, the lords of this name; the family of MONTPAON, allied noble family to the family of Brancion. There was then the family of Vienna; at the end of XVe century, the family of Hochberg, then of Orleans, Longueville. At XVIe century, arrived Saulx-Tavannes; in 1702, begun again stronghold by Fyot of Walk.

The baronnie of Montpont and the seigniory of Montpont pass initially to Francois, adviser at the Parliament of Paris, born in Dijon; then in Claude; count de Bosjean, govern mortar at the Parliament of Burgundy, then with their son Claude-Philibert, count de Bosjean, Baron de Mervans and of Montpont, first president at the Parliament of Burgundy; then with the son of Claude-Philibert, Jean-Philippe, died in 1772. The lords of these grounds paid faith and homage to the lord, Lord Fyot of Walk, baron de Montpont.

The parish of Ménetreuil was then included/understood in the archpriest of Bâgé, of the diocese of Lyon.

The justice of Ménetreuil depended on the bailliage of Trawl-net, and more particularly of Claude Vitte, lawyer at the court and lieutenant with the bailliage of Trawl-net.

Ménetreuil (cf tales of Panurge of Jacques Roy) would come from the stay from ménestrels or ménétriers, of bottom Latin MENESTEREUS, MINISTRELLUS, diminutive of MINISTER, of Provence " menestral" = craftsman, player of instrument, left trouvere; but it is a whimsical interpretation; it is obvious that Ménetreuil comes from MONASTERIOLUM, small monastery. The suffix - IOLUM, - IOLUS gives - euil or - éol.

The forms of files of Ménetreuil are: · 1155 Ecclesia de Monistrolio (Handwritten Desroches) · 1183 Monestrul · XIIe century Ecclesia de Monisteriolo, Monestrel · XIIIe century Monestruel (cartulaire of Savigny) · XVe Montestruel century · XVIe Menestreul century · 1578 Menestreux (Inventory of the strongholds) · 1648 Monestreuil · 1697 Menestreuil · 1734 Menetreux · 1816-1938 Ménetreuil
