Mékélé

Mekele (Other names: Mekelle, Makele, Maqale) (13°29 ′ NR 39°28 ′ E) are a city (but also a woreda) located in Southern the Tigré zone of the Tigré area. It is to 2.060 m of altitude and 780 km in the north of Addis Ababa.

Partially destroyed during the war against Mengistu, Mekele largely profited from the programmes of rehabilitation of post-war periods which make a city very pleasant of it to live and where it is good to stroll. It is a very active, interesting center today by its monuments and more still by its variegated market of Monday which joins together an innumerable crowd. One there touve also an airport and the general headquarter of the mission of UNO in Ethiopia and Erythrée. Some small local inns, of which some very clean, make it possible to radiate starting from this city.

According to the estimates of 2005 of the Central Agency of the Ethiopian Statistics (SCUMS), Mekele counts 169.207 inhabitants (85 876 men and 83.331 women). The woreda extends on a surface from 24,44 km2 and thus has a density of 6 923,4 inhabitants per km2. These estimates are based on the census of 1994. At that time, the population was of 96.938 inhabitants.
