Méir Chétrit

Méir Chétrit (in Hebrew: מאירשטרית) (born in 1948) is a politician and parliamentary Israeli. He is member of the party Kadima since 2005. 7th Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Department since the July 4th 2007.

Personality

Chétrit was born with the Morocco and its family has immigrant in Israel. It followed a program of master in public policy and is graduate Université Bar-Ilan. He is married and father of two children.

Political career

He starts his political career in 1974 with his election as a mayor of Yavné, station which he occupies until in 1987. He is elected with the Knesset in 1981 and is parliamentary until in 1988 then since 1992. In 1988, it is elected treasurer of Jewish Agence for Israel and remains at this station until 1992.

In 1996, it is elected with the head of the political coalition built around the Likoud. In 1998, he becomes Minister for Finance of the government of Benjamin Netanyahou. Since 2001, he is Minister for Justice then Transport in the two successive governments of Ariel Sharon.

With the formation of Kadima, Chétrit leaves Likoud in 2005 and joined the new party. He becomes Minister for the Housing and the Construction of the Gouvernement Olmert after the legislative elections of March 2006.

In July 2006, during the unfolding of the Operation Rain of summer in the Gaza Strip, Meir Chetrit declares that he would be opposed “ to a possible plan of fold in Judaea and Samarie ”, creating the first dissension recorded within the new government.

The August 23rd 2006, it is named Minister for Justice by interim to replace Haim Ramon which resigned the August 20th after its inculpation in a business of sexual harassment.
