Mégapixel

The mégapixel is a common unit of measurement generally relating to the size expressed in Pixels of a numerical sensor of imagery.

The prefix méga means “million”, and thus indicates a value of 1000×1000 Pixels.

It is it should be noted that photographs some numerical color, a posted mégapixel does not correspond to as many real pixels; in the majority of the cases (simple matrix apparatuses), the expressed pixels correspond to monochromic units (4 pixels are divided in 2 green pixels, a red and a blue); there is thus effective information only for 1/4 of the announced pixels. The film cameras and cameras very advanced have a complete matrix for each primary color (red, green and blue); thus they offer a resolution quite higher but at a price definitely less accessible to the general public.
