Definition of the Profession and the context of the intervention
The médico-psychological assistance (AMP) exerts a function of accompaniment and assistance in the daily life.
For this reason, it intervenes with children, from teenagers, adults in situation of handicap (that deficiency is physical, sensory, mental, cognitive, psychic, results from a polyhandicap or an invalidating disorder of health). It can also intervene with people whose situation requires an development assistance or with the maintenance of autonomy on the physical level, psychic or social.
The role of the AMP is at the border of educational and the care. It takes care of the people by a help of permanent proximity during their daily life, by accompanying them as well in the essential acts by this daily newspaper as in the activities by social life and leisures.
Through the accompaniment and the assistance concretes that it brings, the AMP establishes a relation attentive and making safe to prevent and break the insulation of the people and to try to apprehend their needs and their waitings in order to bring an adapted answer to them. It has a role of awakening, encouragement and support of the communication and verbal expression or not.
By the support in the epic of the daily life, the médico-psychological assistance thus takes part in the physical and psychological wellbeing of the person. It also contributes to the prevention of the rupture and/or the reactivation of the social link by the fight against insulation, the maintenance of the assets and the stimulation of the potentialities.
The AMP intervenes within pluri-professional teams. According to the situations, he works under the responsibility for a welfare worker or a ancillary medical professional. Thus it second following the structures or in the residence and according to the circumstances, a teacher, an organizer, a male nurse, a kinesitherapist…
The profession of médico-psychological assistance constitutes a first qualification of the educational die. Approximately 22  is counted; 000 assistances médico-psychological (data DREES 1998) employed in public structures, deprived and associative.
Their principal sectors of intervention are in institutions such as in particular:
- specialized houses of reception (FARMHOUSE);
- médico-educational institutes (IME);
- institutes of driving education (IEM);
- institutes accommodating of the dependant handicapped children;
- hearths of lodging for handicapped adults, hearths of life;
- medicalized hearths of reception;
- occupational hearths for adults (FOA);
- centers of assistance by work (CAT);
- hearths of insertion and transition (the FIT);
- old people's homes;
- services of long stay;
- establishments lodging of the dependant elderly (EHPAD);
- specialized hospitals (CHS);
- psychiatric hospitals;
- IF and general-purpose services of assistance to residence;
- social or educational Institutions (CHRS, GUYS…).
