Mândû

Mândû or Mândûgârh is a site strengthened since the 6th century, perched to 600 m in the mounts Vindhya, to some 90 km of the town of Indore in the area Malwa of Madhya Pradesh. The top of the hill is girdled of a wall of almost 10 km length.

History

The city starts to develop in 1261, when king Jayavaram of the dynasty Râjpout E of the Paramâra transfers his capital to it since Dhâr. But as of 1293, the area falls to the hands from the Musulman S, however Mândû will resist until in 1305 where the Khaljî which reign with Delhi seize some and re-elect it Shadiabâd , the quoted of the joy .

Hoshang Shâh Ghûrî , which reigns of 1405 with 1432 on the area, which it made independent, again transfers its capital to it since Dhâr and embellishes it many monuments as its strategic role gains in importance. Mahmûd Khaljî , which poisons his/her son, Mahmûd Shâh Ghûrî (1432 - 1432) to seize the capacity thus melting the new dynasty of Khaljî of Mâlvâ, made there flower a school of illuminators of books. The city will remain a prosperous center of peace and stability until in 1526 when Bahadur Shah of the Goujerat seizes some. Humâyûn drives out in 1534 of it, but the city between then declining. It will be taken again by Goujerat, released by Akbar in 1561, then taken again by the Marathes in 1732. Dhar finds its place of regional capital and Mândû becomes a phantom city.

The emperors moghols appreciated to remain there and Jahângîr, which remained a few months there, made restore some of its monuments.

Inheritance

The buildings of Mândû have a particular style conceived by the leaders of the dynasty of Ghûrî of Mâlvâ. The majority were built of 1401 with 1526. Among those worthiest of interest are:
  • the mosque of Dilâvar Khân (1405),
  • the falls from Hoshang Shâh (1440) out of white marble. Shâh Jahân sent 4 of its architects to study it time of the design of the Taj Mahal,
  • the Jâmi-masjid (1454), inspired by the mosque of Damas, which occupied 3 generations for its construction,
  • the Ashrafâ Mahal , a madrassa or Koranic school which accommodates it falls from Mahmûd Khaljî,
  • the palate of Baz Bahâdur
