In music, a topic is a melody line or a harmonic sequence taken again throughout a work (opera, film, symphony, etc). It structure musical work while undergoing recoveries, variations and modulations.
Jazz
In Jazz, the harmonized melody line which is used as starting material for the improvisation. In jazz " classique" (swing, Bebop,…), the soloists improvise on the harmonic Grill topic. In the absolute, any piece can serve as “topic” (standard of jazz, popular song, film music, traditional piece,…) thus of support to the improvisation. However a great number of topics of jazz are built on structures of 12 measurements (Blues) or of 32 measurements (A-A'-B-A - to see Anatole - or A-B-A'-C).
