It is a star near located at only 25,4 light-years to the Sun. With Arcturus and Sirius, it is one of the most brilliant stars in the vicinity of the Sun and in the northern hemisphere it is the second most luminous star after Sirius.

Véga is of white color. Its spectral class is A0Va (Sirius, a A1V, is slightly less less luminous) and it is in the principal Séquence, which means that its energy comes from the fusion of helium hydrogen. The mass of Véga is approximately twice and half that of the Sun. Since the more massive stars consume their hydrogen more quickly, the lifespan of Véga is estimated at only one billion years for a current age of approximately 350 million years.
