Ly-Fountain

Ly-Fountain is a common French, located in the department of the Aisne and the area Picardy.

Geography

Ly-fountain is a village located at 5km in the west of Moy of Aisne, at 16 km in the south of St Quentin and at 35km in the west of Laon. It is located on the road of Ribemont at Chauny by Montescourt-Lizerolles; while passing by Origny co. Benoite and the green Hunter on the road of St Quentin in Fère; Ly-fountain forms a center around of which is Cerisy, Benay, Gibercourt, Hinacourt, Remigny, Vendeuil and Moy. It is in this small valley that the cemetery " was; The piteux" in which were buried most of the soldiers who died on August 10th, 1557.

History

Ly-fountain formerly formed part of old Vermandois, and before the Revolution, of the general information of Soissons and the baillage of St Quentin, the election and the diocese of Boundary-line. It forms part left now the district of St Quentin, the canton of Moy and the diocese of Soissons.

One primitevement indicated it under the name of Linifons and then of Read-Fountain . In 1560, one wrote Liffontaine in the documents coming from the files from Vendeuil and Lisfontaine in 1709. Before the revolution this village depended on the chatellenie of Vendeuil.

In the south-east of Ly-Fountain, on the way of remigny, a martyrdom surrounded by trees rises. Located at the exit of Ly-Fountain, this monument, built in 1921, mark the place where 46 French soldiers buried in 1914 rest. It is also the war memorial of the village. One can read there: " With the glorious memory of the children of Ly-Fountain and soldiers fallen on his territory on August 29th, 1914 and in April 1917. Died for France". On other plates are reproduced the names of the eight children of the village died during the Great War, those of the 46 soldiers buried in this place as those of the fifteen men who rest in the communal cemetery (killed in April 1917).

Nothing indicates that these men belonged to 236ème R.I. (regiment formed in Caen) but on August 29th, 1914, it is this regiment, with the order to take Hinacourt and Benay, but also to keep the passages of the Oise, which fought battle in these places, in particular its 23rd company which, under the orders of the captain of Breuvery, resisted during two hours the attacks of three German battalions. This resistance, within the framework of the battle known as of Own way, made it possible the regiment to be folded up on Vendeuil, Fère, Moy and Renansart. In April 1917, this regiment will return a few days in the sector, after the German retreat on the Hindenburg line. Today, this place is regarded as necropolis main road.
