Luyten catalogs

The catalogs Luyten , of the name of their author, the Astronomer Dutch Willem Jacob Luyten, form a whole of catalogs of stars having a own Mouvement important.

Catalogs

Catalog LFT

This catalog, the first of the series, goes back to 1955. It was published by Luyten. Its name is the acronym of Luyten' S Five Tenths'. It counts stars whose own movement exceeds five tenth of Seconde of arc per annum. It comprises: 1849 objects, classified by order ascending of Right ascension in coordinated equatorial relating to the time B1950,0. This catalog from now on obsolete, is replaced by catalogs more recent. The stars are catalogued under designations LFT NNNN , NNNN being an integer going from 1 to 1849.

Catalog LTT

This second catalog, published in several times by Luyten of 1957 with 1962 , , . It counts a greater number of stars, the lower limit of the own movement being lowered to two tenths of a second of arc per annum, for a total of: 18635 objects. It since is replaced by catalog NLTT (see below).

Catalog NLTT

It is about the version revised by Luyten of the precedent, in date of 1979. It comprises: 58845 objects, taking again those of catalog LTT, but under a different name.

Catalog LHS

Catalog LHS, for Luyten, half second was published by Luyten in 1979. A corrective measure concerning two stars was published in 1995 and an update using of more recent measurements (in particular in term of position) was published in 2002.

None of these catalogs takes again the nomenclature of the precedent, contrary to the Catalog Gliese, for example. Thus, the star of Barnard is catalogued under designations LFT 1385, LTT 15309, NLTT 45718 and LHS 57.

Catalog LDS

Of 1940 with 1987, Luyten counted also various binary systems because they shared the same own movement. That gave rise to catalog LDS ( Luyten doubles star ), including: 6181 entries.

Catalog PHL

Catalog PHL, for Palomar observatory, Haro, Luyten , counts blue stars located near the galactic south pole. It was carried out at the observatories of Palomar and Tonantzintla by Luyten and Guillermo Haro. It counts: 8746 objects, of which: 1569 whose Indice of color UV is lower than -0,4 (the most blue objects): 2929 whose index of color UV lies between -0,2 and -0,4 and: 4248 objects whose index of color UV lies between -0,2 and 0,0.

Catalog the dwarf white ones

Luyten also carried out 1970 with 1977 a catalog of dwarf white not having clean designation.
