For the occurrences in the play-videos Resides Evil and Starcraft, to see Lurker

In culture Internet, a lurker is an individual who reads the discussions on a Forum Internet, Newsgroup, Instant messaging or any other space of exchange but without taking part in it.

History

The term appeared in the mediums of the Années 1980, when the majority of people did not have access to Internet and used rather BBS and forums like means of communication.

Many communities of the Net advise with the new arrivals to behave in lurker the first times, in order to include/understand their own culture and to avoid:

  • to publish messages redundant out-matters or,
  • to put observers questions in FAQ, causing a Flame War.
The Néologisme “die-lurker” is used to indicate the moment when new-come leaves this phase from observation and adaptation and starts to contribute to the forum.
