The Québécois television , just like the cinema, is born from the desire of the central government of the Canada to offer to Canadian an alternative on television the United States of America which invades its territory.
It will be done initially by the creation of Radio-Canada on September 6th 1952, TV which will be a long time more than one antenna, but still a true school of audio-visual creation, whose productions obtain the complete adhesion of the public. The benefits of this adhesion will be numerous in term of identity and culture, because the time is with the media of mass. It will be also place of a social and political engagement, as celebrates it strike of the realizers of 1959 will testify some.
This Québécois television, which offers finally an image of Quebec to the inhabitant of Quebec, achieves practically the unanimity with its creation. The dimensions of listenings (TV rating) of the Québécois emissions are always surprising today.
This tele offer a reassuring image, family, whose Plouffe are the incarnation even.
After Radio-Canada will arrive in 1961 TV-Metropolis, a private channel installation by Joseph-Alexandre DeSève, man who had made fortune in the variety, the real estate, and which had a solid experiment in the under-distribution of French cinema in Quebec with France Film.
So historically Radio-Canada represented a certain idea élitaire and nationalist of Canadian television, the people aimed it at liking TV-Metropolis by offering his high-speed motorboats of cabaret to him, and a humor more relaxed. This distinction is less clear today.
September 1966 marked the arrival of the télévison color in the Québécois landscape.
In 1972, the Québécois government puts in wave Radio-Quebec (now TV-Quebec), created 4 years before. During these the first three years of diffusion, this station was not only available on the cable. In 1975, in Montreal, this station was available on the Hertzian waves to the channel 17 which was a long time called " U" channel; because it is on the tape UHF. The mission first of this chain is to promote the culture and education (two provincial competences whereas television is of federal competence).
In September 1986, Télévison Quatre-Saisons opened its doors. This station is of general practitioner type. It presents news bulletins and cinema. At the same moment, a first télévison available only on the cable was born: MusiquePlus marked a whole generation and a new current which was the video clip.
In 1987, MétéoMédia, the Network of the Sports (RDS), the Channel Family and TV5 entered in wave. Quebec thus had stations specialized in the sport, the weather, the family, the music and the francophonie.
January 1st, 1995 entered in wave the Network of the information of Radio-Canada (RDI) and Channel D which diffuses the documentary ones, entertainment.
In September 1997, Musimax (music), Channel Life (health), Télétoon (cartoon), the Channel News of VAT (LCN) (new continuous) entered in wave.
At the end of January 2000, the channel Escape (voyage), Historia (history), Séries+ (international series doubled in French) and Channel Z (now Ztélé, mystery, sciences, technologies and SF) entered in waves. These channels required in the beginning an additional subscription at the cost of 3,99$. Not to subscribe, it was necessary to specify with the cablodistributor whom one did not want to preserve them after the trial period. Following protests, it was necessary to specify with the cablodistributor whom the subscriber wanted to preserve these channels and the cost was lowered to 1,99$.
In September 2001, a made up partnership inter alia Radio-Canada, of TV-Quebec and the Spectra team put in wave ARTV for the blooming of the culture of quality.
2004 marked the arrival of the numeric channels available on the cable. To be able to profit from these chains, it is necessary to have a numerical decoder of a cablodistributor or supplier of TV by satellite. Between 2004 and 2006, the channels Mystery, Money, Network Information-Sport (RIS), Taken 2, Cinépop (cinema of formerly) made their entry in waves.
2004 mark also the beginning of high definition television (HD). Radio-Canada put on its roof at diffusing Montreal an antenna in format ATSC. The terrestrial numerical télévison makes its appearance. It is ansi possible to collect a signal HD of Radio-Canada via the channel UHF 19 in Montreal. The first emissions in HD were the Inn of the black dog, the Blue of the sky and Bon kisses of France. It has truly known its departure in 2006 with emissions HD available to every evening and the arrival of Astral (Vrak.tv, Historia, Séries+, Canal D, Canal Life, Ztélé, Super Screen).
2006 were marked by the crisis of television. Emissions known as " lourdes" who thus cost very expensive were threatened. The diffusers claim not to do enough incomes for conversion into HD. The diffusers general practitioners even required of the CRTC not to more have the obligation to emit a signal terrrestre for their television stations and they ask a financing similar to the specialized chains, i.e. by the financing of the consumer. The décison will come in 2007.
