Luigi Sturzo
Luigi Sturzo , born the November 26th 1871 with Caltagirone, in Sicily, and died with Rome the August 8th 1959, was a catholic priest and an Italian politician.
Biography
Ordered priest the May 19th 1894, it leaves to make studies of Philosophie and Théologie to the Gregorian pontifical Université, with Rome, and turns over in 1898 in its birthplace to teach these disciplines there.
Of 1905 with 1920, he is vice-mayor of Caltagirone and sits at the provincial Council, while playing a leading role in the catholic Action. In 1918, it takes part in the foundation of the Italian Popular party, precursor of the democracy-Christian woman, at the sides of Alcide De Gasperi and Alberto Marvelli, before founding later five years the newspaper Italian Popular party .
The same year, because of its opposition to the Fascism, it must give up its post of secretary of the Party and leave in exile, initially with London, then with New York starting from 1940. For this period, it publishes many works, in particular Italy and Fascism (1926), the international community and the right of the war (1929), the company: its nature and its laws (1936), Political and moral (1938) and the Church and the State (1939).
Returned to Italy in 1946, it does not play any more an important role in the political life of the country, not being implied personally in the Christian Democrat while remaining related to many of its principal persons in charge; it is however named Senator with life the December 17th 1952 by the president of the Republic Luigi Einaudi; he dies in 1959, at the 88 years age. Its lawsuit in Béatification was open the May 3rd 2002. ----
