In Typography, the eye (plural œils ) indicates the part of the letter in relief on the stem.

The eye level or eye level is the height of the layout of a character lower case (the E or the has ), without pole nor jamb, such as it is printed.

Like unit of length, it can be used to change the scale of a cast iron or to calculate the row height according to the cast iron employed. The Style sheets cascades about it (CS) of W3C name this unit “  ex  ” (height of X lower case), and one often meets directives CS of the type {make-size: 1.2ex; line-height: 1.6ex;} (body of the cast iron with 120  % of the size of its eye, spaces between two lines equal to 160  % height of X lower case).
