Ludovic Trarieux

Ludovic Trarieux , French politician, was the first president of the French Ligue of the Human rights of 1898 to 1903.

Biography

A liberal republican

Trarieux was born on November 30th 1840 with Aubeterre-on-Drone (Charente) in an easy family. It makes studies of right which will lead it to the trade of lawyer. He is elected of the Gironde to the Room of the Député S of 1879 to 1881 then with the Sénat of 1885 to his death. It is a republican very liberal, hostile in particular with the creation of the public schools and very critical against the law Waldeck-Rousseau of 1884 on the Syndicat S. He is rapporteur in front of the Senate of the “Lois scélérates” of 1894, limiting the Freedom of the press.

It becomes Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Alexandre Ribot during the major part of the year 1895, being opposed in particular to Jean Jaurès during the Grève of the glass S of Carmaux.

It is thus a man of the right which founds the LDH, this one alarming exclusively then with the right of the person, in the line of the liberal middle-class of the time which neglected or was hostile with the Social rights.

The Dreyfus Business and the creation of the LDH

Ludovic Trarieux doubts as of 1895 of the culpability of Dreyfus, whose case tears the IIIe République. It doubts in particular the regularity of the lawsuit to the Conseil of war, which was held in December 1894. Its doubts are réalimentés by Scheurer-Kestner; the December 7th 1897, it is the only one to support it when it challenges Jules Méline. The 9 and February 10th 1898, it deposit lengthily and firmly in favor of Emile Zola, continued in Diffamation, following the publication of “I show” the January 13rd same year.

Created the same year, the LDH of which he becomes the first president gathers many politicians and Intellectuel S republicans, among which Victor Basch or Lucien Herr, all favorable to the revision of the lawsuit of the captain Alfred Dreyfus.

Seriously sick, it leaves the presidency of the LDH in 1903 and dies the following year.
