Its life is filled of anecdotes often represented in the religious iconography: thus, learning that a father does not have what to provide a dowry of marriage to his three young girls, Nicolas throws money in their bottoms which they had put to dry on the chimney. Thanks to him, the father can ensure the marriage of his three young girls. It ressuscite also three children who, having gone glaner with the fields, had been killed and cut out by a butcher. A pious history

Although intended for the children, one of the Légende S of Nicolas saint is rather alarming. “They were three small children, who from went away glaner to the fields”, like known as the song. Lost, they asked hospitality in a butcher who did not find anything better than to kill them, to cut out them and put them at the salting tub.

Saint Nicolas had suddenly spent seven years later and required in its turn hospitality. He insisted to eat the small one earlier salted prepared seven years. The butcher flees and holy Nicolas ressuscita the three children. ”

It is thus a happy legend, but nevertheless rather alarming. According to certain traditions, Bogyman which accompanies holy Nicolas would be in fact the butcher of the history. To make him regret its misdeed, this last would have condemned it to accompany it at the time of its distribution of rewards, by assigning the task to him to punish the disobeying children.

The legend of the three children was born from a mistake in interpretation of a stained glass representing a miracle of the saint. It would act, according to the historians, of a scene representing holy Nicolas saving three knights begging his assistance at the top of a tower. Saint Nicolas is the main character of the scene, and like often with the Moyen-âge, it is not represented on the scale, but in much larger to show its importance. It is this detail which would have opened the way with a bad interpretation; and the three knights at the top of a tower became three children in a bucket.

According to some, Bogyman is an invention of the Residents of Metz at the time of the seat of their city by the Burgundian ones, in full period of festivity of the Saint Nicolas's Day. From there would have come to them the idea to make fun of the enemy chief, Charles Quint by representing it under the features of the butcher of the legend of Nicolas saint.

During his birth, holy Nicolas would have been held all alone upright, well right on his legs. It would act, according to the legend, of its very first miracle.
