Lucq-of-Béarn

Lucq-with-Béarn is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.
Its inhabitants is called Lucquois and Lucquoises.

Geography

Commune of the Yrénées-Atlantiques, Lucq-of-Béarn is in the center of the triangle Oloron-Holy-Marie - Monein - Navarrenx, to approximately 35 km in the south-west of Pau. Lucq-of-Béarn fact part of the most extended communes of France with a distance of more than 15 km between each one of its most distant ends. The landscape is undulating with a culminating point with 333m of altitude.

Hydrography

The commune is crossed by affluents of the Gave of Pau, the brooks the Laà (and by its tributary, the brook Bounchoun) and the Géu and by affluents of the Gave d' Oloron, the brooks the Auronce, the Laüs and the Layoû.

Toponymy

The toponym Lucq , of Latin lucus “wood crowned”, appears in the forms Villa of Luco, villa quœ vocatur Luc and Sanctus-Vincentius de Sylva-Bona (respectively Xe and XIe centuries, cartulaire of the abbey of Lucq), Lucus (1323, censier of Béarn), Feels-Bisentz Luc and lo mostier of Feels-Vinssentz Luc (respectively 1365 and 1426, notaries of Lucq-of-Béarn).

It comes from Latin lucum: wood, forest.

History

Paul Raymond note which the commune counted an abbey of Bénédictin S founded with Xe century by Guillaume Sanche.
In 1385 Lucq depended on the Bailliage of Navarrenx and counted 241 fires.

The commune is located on an alternative way of the Chemin of Pyrenean Piedmont (or el cami deu EP of the coste ), secondary route of the Pèlerinage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle.
The old abbey dates from XIIe century and was classified with the historic buildings in 1990.
The church Saint-Vincent-Deacon is also very old (XIe century) and was altered several times until the XIXe century.
