Lucknow

Lucknow (Hindi: लखनऊ; Urdu: لکھنو Lakhnaû ) is the capital of the State of the Uttar Pradesh, in India. Its population rises with 2.266.933 inhabitants (2001), which makes of it the second city of Uttar Pradesh after Kanpur (2 690.486 hab.)

The city is known in India for its kitchen.

History

Founded at the 13th century, the city developed truly only starting from the beginning of the 18th century when the Moghols named a Nabab to control the area, the Awadh (or Oudh). This dynasty of nabobs will perdura until the annexation of the territory by the Britanniques in 1856.

End 1857, the city was the theater of bloody confrontations at the time of the Révolte of Cipayes. The city was besieged then taken by the rebels. It was taken again by the British only in March 1858 after a savage resistance.
