Luciano Berio
Luciano Berio (October 24th 1925 with Oneglia - May 27th 2003 with Rome) Type-setter Italy N considered for its experimental work and its work of pioneer in the Music electroacoustic.
His/her father and his grandfather were organists who taught him the Piano. From 1946 to 1951, he studied with the academy Giuseppe Verdi of Milan at Giulio Cesare Paribeni (counterpoint) and Giorgio Federico Ghedini (composition). It is at that time that he discovers the modern type-setters: Vienneses, Bartok, Stravinski, Hindemith or Milhaud.
Wounded with the hand, it cannot continue its studies of piano and earns its living like guide of classes of song. It became acquainted American with the soprano thus Cathy Berberian which it married in 1950. They remained married until 1964.
In 1951, it went to the United States to Tanglewood to study at Luigi Dallapiccola which pushed its interest towards the principles of the Sérialisme. It took part in the Ferienkurse für Neue Musik with Darmstadt where it became acquainted with Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti and Mauricio Kagel. It started to be interested in the electronic music and founded in 1954 in Milan the “Studio di Fonologia Musicale” with Bruno Maderna. It invited there many type-setters like Henri Pousseur and John Cage. Amongst other things, he became editor of a review devoted to the experimental music, the “Incontri Musicali”.
In 1960, it turned over to Tanglewood and, with the invitation of Darius Milhaud in 1962, he became professor in Mill' S College with Oakland, California. As from 1965, he taught at the University of Harvard and the Juilliard School off Music where he founded the “Juilliard Unit” which is devoted to the modern music (New York, 1967). In 1966, it gains the “Prix Italia” for its work “Laborintus II”. In 1968 will be presented to the public its most outstanding work, the “Sinfonia”.
In 1972, it turned over to Italy to settle in Rome. From 1974 to 1980, he was director of the department of Acoustique of IRCAM to Paris. With Florence, it founded, in 1987, the Tempo Reale, a of the same center orientation than the IRCAM.
From 1994 to 2000, he was type-setter in residence with Harvard. He composed there until the end of his life. He dies on May 27th, 2003.
