Luca Cambiaso

Luca Cambiaso (or Cangiagio ) known as Lucchetto da Genova (Moneglia, 1527 - Escorial, 1585) is an Italian painter of the school génoise.

Biography

Luca Cambiaso is born in Moneglia the October 18th 1527. His/her father is the painter Giovanni Cambiaso (1495-1579), born with San Quirico , a district of Genoa, place which it had had to give up to escape the troops from the constable from Borbone.

Raise of his/her Giovanni father, it is quickly influenced by the artists of flourishing the Maniérisme génois and in which it will develop his own methods (a luminism which will inspire Georges of the Tower). Its first lesson consists in copying the projects of the Masters of the Italian Rebirth, modelling clay figures and especially studying the frescos of Perin del Vaga, Domenico Beccafumi and Pordenone, recent and carried out for the palate Andrea Doria in Fassolo.

Art of Giovanni one knows only the first work carried out in 1545 in collaboration with his/her Luca son. It is about polyptyque of Breccanecca (Cogorno), ordered on February 6th, 1545 by Massari of the church. The notarial act, found by Federico Alizeri, is always preserved at Sant' Antonino Martire of Cogorno.

Luca Cambiaso arrives at Rome shortly after the death of Perin del Vaga, its first point of reference. The other artist with whom he will work then, Giovanni Battista Castello says the Bergamask, hardly left Rome. He goes then as a Emilie where he can directly see the art of Parmigianino and of the Corrège. He crosses a first phase in the style of Parmigianino with the Adoration of the Magi of the convent of San Domenico of Taggia.

In 1547 and 1548, both Cambiaso paint with fresco the palate of Antonio Doria in Acquasola (today prefecture of the Doria palate) with a prevalence of the hand of Giovanni in the Histoires of Hercules and in those of the Trojan War , loans of a strong influence of the style of Michel-Angel, which makes from there the atmosphere heavy.

In 1583, it accepts the invitation of Philippe II of Spain to achieve a series of frescos started with Castello with Escorial. It carries out a paradise on the vault of the church, with a multitude of figures. For this work it receives 2.000 ducats, probably the greatest sum for a work simple but accomplished in a great religious rigor.

His/her son Orazio Cambiasi became also painter and among his pupils in Genoa, one will note: Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo, Simone Barabino, Giulio Benso, Battista Castello and his/her brother Bernardo Castello, Giovanni Battista Paggi, Francesco Spezzini and Lazzaro Tavarone.
