Geography

History

The Latin name of Luc, Lucus , evokes a crowned wood of Gallic time. Perhaps this is there the origin of this Roman capital installed in the current of I er to the foot of the mountains of Diois. It divides with Vaison-the-Roman this statute of chief town of city of the Voconces, important romanized Gallic people.

An important erosion deeply hid the vestiges of this ancient city, which one guesses monumental: the remainders of a large temple, built on the same model as that of Vienna, an arm of monumental statue (more than 4 m in height) and many inscriptions are visible with the Musée of Die and Diois.

For unknown reasons, the capital of Voconces is transferred towards Die at the beginning of the 2nd century. Little by little, the city will not be depopulated not to be any more but a mansio , station of edge of Roman way, at the beginning of the 4th century. A fort is however installed at the same time at the top of the peak of Luc, in order to supervise the way which acquired an strategic importance since the Roman armies fight on the the Rhine: the way of the Drome, between the Durance and the Rhone, is most practicable in winter to connect Milan to Cologne
