Luc-Olivier Merson

Nicolas Luc-Olivier Merson (Paris, 1846 - 1920) is a French artist who expressed his art on many supports. He is regarded as an academic, modest and conscientious painter, who was not entitled to a posthumous celebrity because of the expansion of the artistic currents at his time.

A career filled of honors

Large Price of Rome in 1869 with the soldier of Marathon , it obtains the medal of first class to the Salon of the French artists in 1875, the gold medal at the time of the World Fair of 1889 to Paris. In 1892, the dedication arrives with its election to the Institut. Little before its death, it receives the medal of honor of the Living room of the artists for the whole of his work.

Of 1906 with 1911, he was foreman to the École of the Art schools.

Knight of the Legion of honor since 1891, it is made commander on a purely posthumous basis in 1920.

Modeste and conscientious, Merson developed his art on many supports and illustrated mainly religious and historical topics:
  • of the fabrics,
  • of the mural compositions: Town hall of Paris, Op3era Comique,…
  • of the mosaic S as in the basilica of the Sacred Heart (475 m ²).
  • of the stained glasses: church Holy-Eugenie (Biarritz), Vault Belmont (New York),…
  • of the enamels, the Earthenware S, the illustrated books, etc

It also drew banknotes and postage stamps of France and Monaco, of which a series of stamps of everyday usage, the Type Merson.
