Luboš Kohoutek

Luboš Kohoutek (January 29th 1935 with Zábřeh in Moravie) is a Czech Astronome .

Kohoutek was interested in astronomy as of the college. He studied physics and astronomy in the universities of Brno and Prague (studies finished in 1958). Then it started to work at the Institute of Astronomy of the Czechoslovakian Academy of Science, where it published a catalog often quoted ( Catalog of galactic planetary nebulas , 1967). Kohoutek obtained a permanent station at the observatory of Hamburg - Bergedorf. After the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia (1968), it decided to remain in Germany (1970). Its discoveries of the Seventies made it well-known in the media. Later, Kohoutek worked in observatories in Spain and in Chile, studying the planetary nebulas. It took its retirement in 2001. Kohoutek published 162 scientific articles.

Astronomical discoveries

Kohoutek is especially known for its many discoveries Comet S, whose periodic comets 75P/Kohoutek and will 76P/West-Kohoutek-Ikemura, as well as famous and disconcerting the " Comet Kohoutek " (C/1973 E1), at long period.

He also discovered many Astéroïde S, of which the Astéroïde Apollo (1865) Cerberus.

The asteroid (1850) Kohoutek was named in its honor.
