The river Chambeshi is the principal tributary feeding the lake Bangwelo and consequently constitutes the independent source of food of Luapula. The plain surrounding the lake and Luapula is largely easily flooded, nevertheless Luapula counts several important falls of which the Chutes Mumbuluma, the Chutes Musenda and the Chutes Mambilima. In DRC, the localities of Kasenga and Kilwa are located on Luapula.
