Luai Al-Atassi

Luai Al Atassi (1926 - 2003) (Arab: rear RTL لؤيالأتاسي) was the president of Syria March 9th with the July 27th 1963.

Rented was born with Homs in the family Atassi, a strongly politicized family, it made its studies in the military academy in this same city. It fought at the time of the Israeli-Arab Guerre of 1948, it then became military Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps under the government of Hachem Al-Atassi in 1954. Luai was initially military attach3e to the Syrian embassy with the Cairo, or it became Nationaliste Arabic under the influence of the Egyptian president, Gamal Abdel Nasser. Atassi was very favorable to the creation of the United Arab Republic, and criticized the attitude of the general Kouzbari who made leave Syria of this union with the Egypt. After this event, it becomes military attach3e to the Syrian embassy with Washington. He was convened with Damas to testify against nasserists who sought to reconstitute the union. But he refused to testify against them and has even imprisoned him for that.

The March 8th 1963, the military wing of the Left Baath, proceeds to a Coup d'etat, thus it is released from prison and is indicated President of the national revolutionary council charged to exert the executive authority in the country. He became president of the republic, but he had limited capacities. He resigns of his item four months later, on July 27th, 1963. It is then turned over to live in Homs during nearly forty years, it did not take part any more in the political life or soldier since.
