Lu Drunk

Lu Drunk (? - February 7th 199) or Lu Louse (Chinese traditional: zh-Hant 呂布, simplified: Zh-Hans 吕布, Pinyin: Lǚ Bù), of sound social Prénom Fengxian (zh-Hant 奉先, Fèngxiān) was a general then small a Seigneur of war of the time of the end of the Dynastie Han. Lu Drunk is mainly known to have betrayed and have killed his/her two adoptive fathers, Ding Yuan in 189 and the tyrant Dong Zhuo in 192. After having betrayed the governor Liu EIB by twice in 196 and 198 and taken possession of the province of Xu, it was captured by the lord of war CAD CAD. This last thought one moment to keep it with its service, but after having considered its multiple treasons, preferred to carry out it by strangulation in 199.

Its character was popularized at the 14th century by the novel Histoire of the Three Kingdoms of Luo Guanzhong. He is presented there like an invincible, main warrior of the Hallebarde and arc, overlapping the horse Red Lièvre able to traverse thousand Li in one day. According to a proverb of the time: “Among the men there is Lu Drunk, among the horses, there is Red Lièvre. ” However, it is there also depicts like a person arrogant, cheating and easy to handle.

Lu Drunk is known with the Japan under the name of Ryofu Hōsen , in Korea under that of Yeopo Bongseon (KB 여포봉선) and with the Vietnam under that of VI Lã Bố Phụng Tiên .

Biography

Service under Ding Yuan and Dong Zhuo

According to the Book of Chronic Han posterior and the of the Three Kingdoms , Lu Drunk is born in the district from Wuyuan in Jiuyuan (today Baotou in the Shaanxi). Recognized for its martial talents, it is recommended to be used the province as Bing (area in the neighborhoods of current the Shanxi). When the inspector of the province, Ding Yuan, is promoted with the rank of colonel of the cavalry (zh-Hant 騎都尉, qí dūwèi ) and posts himself in garrison with Henei (today Hanoï), it takes Lu Drunk under its orders and names it main registers (zh-Hant 主簿, zhǔ bù ).

In 189, to died of the emperor Lingdi, and following the crisis of succession, Ding Yuan goes with its army to Luoyang, then the capital, and takes along Lu Drunk with him. It lines up at the sides of the marshal He Jin and plots against the eunuques ones which hold part of the capacity. However, the cabal is ventilated and He Jin is assassinated, which starts a purging of eunuques with the imperial palace. The general Dong Zhuo arrives at the capital shortly after with his own army and adapts the He Jin soldiers and He Miao, died during the purging. Eager to also annex the troops of Ding Yuan, he manages to convince Lu Drunk to kill this one for him, knowing that Ding Yuan carried a whole confidence to him. Lu Drunk brings back to Dong Zhuo the head of Ding Yuan and receives in reward the rank of colonel of the cavalry. Dong Zhuo, which dedicates a true affection to him, takes it as wire adoptive. In 190, Dong Zhuo détrône Liu Bian, which had just been proclaimed emperor, to establish in its place Liu Xie (the emperor Xiandi). After having plundered Luoyang, it moves the capital with Chang' year (today Xi' year), proclaims Prime Minister and control the empire through the emperor.

Lu Drunk proves to be a rider and achieved archer, from a great physical force, and receives the nickname of “flying general” (zh-Hant 飛將, fēi jiāng ). Later, it is promoted with the row of imperial lieutenant-general of army (zh-Hant 中郎將, zhōng láng jiāng ) and receives the title of marquis de Douting (zh-Hant 都亭侯, Dōutíng hóu ).

Knowing that it had been made much enemies and fearing to be made assassinate, Dong Zhuo uses Lu Drunk as bodyguard and permanently keeps it at its sides. However, it is shown often irritable and lets burst its anger without thinking of the consequences. One day, Drunk Lu makes a small fault and Dong Zhuo, furious, seizes a small halberd and throws it against him. Lu Drunk manages to dodge it and make accept its excuses, but after this incident rancour towards Dong Zhuo conceives. Lu Drunk, also in charge of the protection of the apartments of Dong Zhuo, an adventure with one of its maidservants has, and lives in the anguish that Dong Zhuo discovers it.

In May 192, Drunk Lu entrusts to the Minister for the People Wang Yun. This last conspired then against Dong Zhuo and proposes with Lu Drunk to join its plot. Initially, Drunk Lu refuses: “Dong Zhuo and me naps father and wire, how could I act thus? ”, however rétorque Wang Yun: “Your family name is Lu. You are not same flesh nor same blood as Dong Zhuo. And now you fear that this one one day does not kill to you. How can one speak about father and wire under these conditions? ” Convinced, Drunk Lu agrees to adopt the plot of Wang Yun.

The May 22nd, Lu Drunk goes to the doors of the palate of Chang' year with ten men, of which the colonel of the cavalry Li Known, to accommodate Dong Zhuo. Li Known Dong Zhuo attacks, and this one, alarmed, calls Lu Drunk with the assistance. Lu Drunk known as simply: “I have an imperial order” before killing it. The Master of the registers Tian Jing precipitates near the body of Dong Zhuo but Lu Drunk the slaughtering also. In reward, Wang Yun names it “general which causes prestige” (zh-Hant 奮威將軍 fèn wēi jiāngjūn ) and marquis de Wen (zh-Hant 温侯, Wēn hóu ) and the ceremony which it receives in this honor is worthy of that of the Three ministers. Exile

Because of the assassination of Dong Zhuo, Drunk Lu attracts itself the animosity of many people in the province of Liang, the more so as no imperial forgiveness is pronounced for the former subordinates of Dong Zhuo. One of them, Li Jue, assisted by Guo If, lance an attack against Chang' year. According to the Chronic of the heroes , Drunk Lu convinces Guo Si to face it in a singular duel and manages to wound it of a blow of lance.

The June 28th 192, Lu Bü is overcome and flees Chang' year through the strait of Wu in company of a few hundreds of riders, while Li Jue seizes the emperor. The July 4th, it makes carry out Wang Yun and all its family. Lu Drunk takes refuge near the lord of war Yuan Shu. By killing Dong Zhuo, which was an enemy of Yuan Shu, Drunk Lu thought of having rendered to this last a great service. But Yuan Shu, counterirritated by multiple Lu treasons Drunk during its career, refuses to take it with its service. Consequently, Drunk Lu goes to north and aspires to a station near Yuan Shao, a powerful lord of war.

Yuan Shao decides to engage it and sends it in forwarding to Changshan against the gangster Zhang Yan, who then carries out a rebellion with ten thousand soldiers and several thousands of riders. Lu Drunk share with its horse, Red Hare, like its adviser Cheng Lian, and manages to come to end from Zhang Yan. However, its troops plunder the area, with the great dissatisfaction with Yuan Shao. Feeling the animosity of Yuan Shao in its connection, Lu Drunk request with Yuan Shao the permission to leave it. Yuan Shao, for fear Drunk Lu is not turned over one day against him, plans its assassination. According to the Chronic of the heroes , after its victories, Drunk Lu is arrogant towards the generals of Yuan Shao, refuses to obey their orders, and claims that one offers the town of Luo to him. Yuan Shao makes mine offer a post of colonel and offer thirty soldiers to him who have the role of assassinating it. However the plot spreads and when the soldiers carry out their orders with the favor of the night, they do not stab that the bed and cloths.

Lu Drunk flees in Henei and Yuan Shao orders with its generals to continue it, but those fear so much Drunk Lu that they avoid pressing the step too much.

During its escape, Drunk Lu makes the meeting of Zhang Miao, the large governor of Chenliu, and before its departure, both tighten the hand to make a solemn wish of friendship. However this gesture is worth in Zhang Miao to attract itself the lightnings of Yuan Shao, which was in cold with this one since the time of the coalition against Dong Zhuo. Zhang Miao also fears not to be able to count on the protection of the lord of war CAD CAD in spite of the bonds of friendship which link them. This is why in 194 (1 year of Xingping ), Zhang Miao joined his/her brother Zhang Chao and the general Chen Gong in a rebellion against CAD CAD. Chen Gong then recruits Drunk Lu and the station of guard of the province of Yan offers to him. CAD CAD, which conducted then a campaign against CAT Qian to avenge death for his/her father must be withdrawn to subdue the rebellion. He faces Drunk Lu with Puyang during a hundred days without managing to overcome it. The famine however forces Lu Drunk to fold up itself in the east of Shanyang. Over the two following years, CAD CAD manages to take again all the rebellious cities and inflicts a defeat with Drunk Lu with Juye. Lu Drunk flees towards the east, to take refuge near Liu EIB, the governor of the province of Xu.

Occupation of Xu

According to the Chronic of the heroes , Drunk Lu is shown extremely respectful towards Liu EIB. It invites it to its tent, lets it sit down on the bed of his wife, obliges his wife to present her regards to him, a feast prepares to him, and names it “little brother”. However Liu EIB considers the Lu words Drunk hollow and made mine accept without being convinced.

Liu EIB prepares a forwarding in the east to attack Yuan Shu, which had proclaimed emperor. Lu Drunk, with the complicity of CAD Bao, benefits from it to betray Liu EIB, to capture Xiapi and to proclaim governor of Xu (zh-Hant 徐州刺史, Xúzhōu cìshǐ ). Yuan Shu sends the general Ji Ling with an army of thirty thousand men to attack Liu EIB and this last must be solved to require of the assistance to Drunk Lu. The Drunk Lu generals recommend to him: “My general, you always wished to kill Liu EIB, you can let Yuan Shu undertake some. ” But Drunk Lu answers: “Not, because if Yuan Shu demolishes Liu EIB, it will be able coordiner with its generals in north, and I will find myself encircled. I do not have an other choice only to save Liu EIB. ” It goes near Liu EIB with thousand soldiers and two hundred riders, and Ji Ling, learning that Drunk Lu arrives, does not dare to launch the attack. Lu Drunk invites Ji Ling with a feast in company of Liu EIB, and during this one, says to him: “Social Xuande of Liu EIB is a little brother for me, and your army is encircling my little brother, this is why I come to save it. But I do not appreciate to solve the problems by violence, I prefer to solve them by the discussion. ” Drunk Lu orders that one plants a halberd at the entry of the camp, and announces: “Messeigneurs, look at drawing me an arrow on the pole from the halberd. If my arrow reaches its target, you will cease the hostilities. In the contrary case, you can begin the confrontation. ” Seizing its arc it draws right in the pole from the halberd, and around him the generals exclaim: “The general Drunk Lu has the celestial power. ” The banquet continues until the following day, then the two armies separate.

Yuan Shu then tries to rejoin Lu Drunk with him by sending a messenger, Han Yin, to propose to marry the son of Yuan Shu with the Drunk Lu girl. The latter accepts the marriage and Yuan Shu requires so that Drunk Lu send his/her daughter to him. However, Chen GUI, the governor of Pei and enemy political of Yuan Shu fears this union and tries to persuade Lu Drunk to refuse this marriage and to join rather to CAD CAD. Lu Drunk, which kept rancour towards Yuan Shu when formerly this one had refused to keep it with its service, is let convince, makes point out the carriage of his/her daughter which was already on the way, and makes decapitate Han Yin. Meanwhile, CAD CAD recommends Lu Drunk to the station of general of the left (zh-Hant 左將軍, zuǒ jiāngjūn ). When it receives the news, Drunk Lu is insane of joy and sends Chen Deng, the son of Chen GUI, with the capital to transmit its thanks and to officially aspire to the station of imperial guard of the province of Xu (zh-Hant 徐州牧, Xúzhōu mù ).

When Chen Deng makes the meeting of CAD CAD, he says to him that Drunk Lu, though brave man, does not have any tactic, that he is prompt to change his/her colors, and that it would be judicious as quickly as possible to draw aside it from the political scene. CAD CAD says then: “Drunk is the such wolf cub, full with wild ambitions. It should not be raised longer. ” It rewards Chen GUI and appoints Chen Deng large governor of Guangling while giving him as instructions to recruit more men who could be used as double agent.

When Chen Deng turns over near Drunk Lu and that this one learns that CAD CAD did not make it name governor of Xu, it is so furious that it seizure a halberd and strikes a table of it. He shouts then in Chen Deng: “Your father had advised me to combine to me with lord CAD and to give up the proposal for a marriage of social Gonglu of Yuan Shu . Te here is of return without anything for me whereas your father and largely seem you to have benefitted from the voyage. I am certain that you betrayed me. What do you have says ego? ” Chen Deng remains calm during the glare of Drunk Lu fury and answers quietly: “When I saw lord CAD, I said to him: “To treat with my general Bu is like raising a tiger: it is necessary to give him its content with meat because when it is hungry, he devours the men.” But Lord CAD answered me: “I am not agreement. It is rather like raising an eagle: it is useful only as long as it is hungry because once it ate, it flies away with far.” ” These words calm the Drunk Lu fury then and dissipates its suspicions.

Yuan Shu, furious of the Drunk Lu behavior, sends the general Zhang Xun in company of Han Xian and Yang Feng to attack it. Lu Drunk known as in Chen GUI: “Yuan Shu sent to me its armed because I took your advice. What will we make? ” Chen GUI answers: “Xian, Feng and Yu were sent together, but those cannot be meant when it is a question of setting up tactics. According to my Deng son, they are the such hens which all cannot perch themselves on the branch: it will be enough to sow the discord between them and their army will divide. ” Drunk Lu then sends messengers to propose in Han Xian and Yang Feng to betray Yuan Shu and to attack Zhang Xun in the exchange of all the equipment that Yuan Shu had entrusted to them. Those accept and inflict in Zhang Xun an important defeat.

Fall

In June 198, Drunk Lu betrays Liu EIB again and is combined in Yuan Shu. Initially, CAD CAD sends the general Xiahou Dun to come to assistance of Liu EIB, but this one east demolishes by Gao Shun. CAD CAD decides to personally carry out a forwarding to come to end from Drunk Lu, and, when it begins the head office of Xiapi, it sends a letter to Lu Drunk to encourage it to go. Lu Drunk initially thinks of accepting, but its adviser Chen Gong opposes it vehement and Lu Drunk request finally Yuan Shu to send reinforcements to him. He tries an exit with thousand riders, but undergoes a defeat and shelters behind the walls of the city and does not dare any more to try of new battle.

Yuan Shu does not send to Lu Drunk any reinforcement and Drunk Lu starts to be shown being wary towards its own army, although it always trusts its generals. The latter however are very divided and lose the majority of their battles. CAD CAD makes divert water of the Yi river to flood the city and after three months of seat, the moral one is with lowest. According to the Book of Han posterior , Hou Cheng, a Drunk Lu general, wants to celebrate a victory with a little wine and request the authorization exceptional with Lu Drunk to be able to serve a little alcoholic drink. Lu Drunk puts themselves in anger at the request and shows Hou Cheng to conspire against him by slackening the discipline among its rows. Frightened by the Drunk Lu reaction.
