Low fantasy

The low fantasy is not under kind of the Fantasy strictly speaking, but rather a term used for the works of fantasy to the characteristics opposed to the High fantasy.

Inside, one finds shovel mixes: Heroic fantasy ; Fantasy urban, Science fantasy and Dark fantasy. These under kinds being opposed to the characteristics high fantasy

The heroic fantasy presents thus of the heroes alone, of the personal stakes; what opposes it to the high fantasy. The urban fantasy and science fantasy leave the framework of the past, only favourable with the high fantasy. Lastly, the dark fantasy puts in scene of the amoraux heroes, with the values diverted and often removes the omnipresent Manicheism in high fantasy.

Certain purists consider that any work where the real-world communicates with another world (the secondary world) does not belong to the high fantasy but to the low fantasy. Unfortunately that excludes from works like the Chronicles of Narnia and In crossed worlds where the principal elements of the high fantasy are present: iniatic search, war enters the Good and the Evil, epic battles, not-human creatures, developed secondary world.
